And While You're at it, Mikey

Stuff came up so you'll get part two tomorrow, but I'm adding a few suggestions for Mikey:

Husker Du's New Day Rising
Jawbox
late period Government Issue
Dinosaur Jr.'s You're Living All Over Me
and Superchunk

Maybe you know all these. Maybe not.

I have a lengthy reply on the subject of The Hold Steady, specificity, early blues, early Bruce Springsteen, Charles Bukowski, but it'll all be folded into part two, cornbread style.

  2. Ok, getting all of Husker Du... tired of every damned thing in the world referring to them and me not knowing what it's about...

3 Jawbox albums... surprisingly hard to find...

I found the first and last G.I. cds... they too appear difficult to locate... the basist from GI/Jawbox is also in Burning Airlines, who's CDs I've had since high school and never got around to listen to even though I was told even back then that they were good.

Dino Jr = getting all except "Kracked" which is blank for some reason... I hope that wasnt a specific song I needed to hear

Superchunk - Here's where the strings come in, and Foolish is all I could find for now...

    -------

So where those other names you mentioned in a previous post bands? b/c if so I have what appears to be ALL Guided By Voices cds, The Fall - Live at the Witch Trials, and I already told you I got the Springsteen album you wanted.

This is a LOT to absorb at the moment. I may not tag it all before I hand it over. Especially since we probably have different tag styles as it is I'm hoping that won't be too big a deal

  3. Delete/re-add due to typos (there was no edit button!):

I have heard the names but not the music. Thanks for the input!

I hope you ended up liking The Hold Steady. I spent some time on SongMeanings.net today and learned about a lot of references to poets, writers, and other bands that I would have NEVER got on my own (actually a reference I looked up led me to find a writer, which led me to a band, which led me to a webcomic i spent all day and night reading).

I think The Hold Steady is one of those bands that you really have to listen to multiple times to not just appreciate, but really understand what the guy is saying/referencing. You, with the more well-read/well-listened background, probably picked up a lot more than I did on your first go-round... but I'm still finding things. After today I appreciate some songs 100% more than I did before just by realizing what a few lines were really saying.

  4. I checked out songmeanings.net. For the song "Stay Positive" someone corrected the lyrics -- the band 7 Seconds was written seven seconds.

Youth of Today was also the name of a band, from the same straight edge scene. I felt like adding a comment about that, but don't want another damn internet account.

I'm looking to replace my Fall collection I had on vinyl. I already have most of the early stuff on cd. I'm also looking to some of the recent material, because I'm curious as to what they've been up to.

Anyway, they have a million recordings or so:

Here's my take on Huskers. Much of it wasn't great or even good. So if you're concerned with overload, stick with Zen Arcade and New Day Rising. Most people consider Zen Arcade their most important record, but I prefer NDR.

For Superchunk, No Pocky for Kitty and the one song "Slack, Motherfucker" off their first cd is what you need.

Dinosaur Jr. had a lot of junk, too. And, what's more, they were originally called Dinosaur so I don't know if that helps you in your completist quest. You're Living All Over Me is their masterwork. Bug is okay. The new one I like very much. There are some nice singles, too -- Freak Scene and Just Like Heaven (a Cure cover) and Chunks (a cover of legendary early Boston hardcore band Last Rights).

I personally don't care for early Government Issue, but I wonder what you'll make of the last one.

I mentioned the Springsteen to Billy and he almost cried. He is like that, and kindness moves him greatly. I mean, he really got teary eyed. Not making that up.
